This day trip takes you off the beaten tourist path and into the heart of rural Romania. We drive northeast from Bucharest into the Prahova countryside, where the landscape transforms into rolling green hills dotted with haystacks, orchards, and traditional farmsteads.

Our first stop is the Slanic Prahova salt mine, one of the largest and most spectacular in Europe. Descending 200 meters underground, you enter a vast chamber carved from pure salt — the walls, ceiling, and floor all glittering with salt crystals. The temperature stays at a constant 12°C year-round, so bring a light jacket even in summer. The mine has been in operation since the 17th century and the underground air is renowned for its therapeutic properties — locals with respiratory conditions come here regularly for the salt-infused atmosphere. It’s an awe-inspiring experience that feels like entering another world.

After emerging from the mine, we continue to a traditional village near Secaria, nestled in the Carpathian foothills. Here you’ll visit local homes, meet the families who still live off the land, and learn about the traditional way of life that has barely changed in centuries. You might see a shepherd leading his flock down the village road, or a horse-drawn cart loaded with freshly cut hay — scenes that have vanished from most of Europe but remain everyday life here. Your guide will introduce you to the villagers, and you’ll enjoy a home-cooked lunch prepared with fresh, locally grown ingredients — think fresh cheese, homemade bread, hearty soups, and grilled meats.
