What You’ll Experience
We meet at Manuc’s Inn, the oldest inn in Bucharest, and walk straight into what was once the thriving heart of Jewish life in this city. In the 1930s, Jewish Romanians made up roughly 11% of the country’s population — a community of intellectuals, artists, merchants, and craftspeople who shaped Bucharest’s cultural identity in ways that are still visible today.
Our first major stop is the Great Polish Synagogue, a striking Moorish-Gothic building that once served one of the largest congregations in southeastern Europe. From there, we walk to the magnificent Choral Temple, built in 1857 and still an active synagogue — its ornate interior is breathtaking, a soaring testament to a community that built grandly because it believed in its future here.
Along the way, your guide will tell you about the architects, writers, and thinkers who came from this neighborhood. Marcel Iancu, the Dadaist artist and architect, left his mark on Bucharest’s skyline with bold modernist buildings that still stand in the Jewish Quarter. We will stop at several to admire his work and discuss the remarkable cultural movement he helped create.
But this tour does not shy away from the darker chapters. We will visit the Holocaust Memorial and speak honestly about the Romanian Fascist pogrom, the deportations to Transnistria, and the systematic destruction of a community that had called Romania home for centuries. We will also discuss the communist-era demolitions that erased synagogues and Jewish landmarks in the name of Ceausescu’s grand urban plans.
The tour passes by the Jewish Theater and the historic Baraseum Theatre, and includes a stop at the Moses Rosen Museum, which preserves artifacts and documents from Romania’s Jewish heritage. Throughout the walk, your guide will share stories of famous Romanian Jews — from playwright Eugène Ionesco to Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel — who carried this neighborhood’s spirit into the world.
