Brasov

Named Kronstadt by the medieval Germans who settled it, Brașov deserves its fame as the City of the Crown. It sits at the southern edge of Transylvania, wrapped around the foot of Tampa mountain — and although it is one of Romania’s largest cities, it surprises visitors with its compact Old City and meandering narrow streets. Make sure you walk Rope Street, one of the narrowest streets in Europe; sit on a wooden bench at the First Romanian School, where Romanian was first taught and printed; admire the horse parade at the Junii Brașovului spring festival; or eat a pork knuckle with horseradish at the Christmas Market.

The Black Church and the medieval core

The Black Church, the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, dominates the main square with its dark limestone walls, scarred by the great fire of 1689 that gave it its name. Step inside to see a remarkable collection of over 100 Anatolian rugs, donated by Saxon merchants across the centuries — one of the finest such collections anywhere in Europe. Nearby, the Catherine Gate, with its four corner turrets, is the only original medieval city gate still standing, a reminder of Brașov’s layered Saxon, Romanian and Hungarian heritage. The pastel facades of Council Square, the old guild houses and the surviving stretches of city wall and watchtowers make the centre one of the most photogenic in the country.

Mountains on the doorstep

Few European cities have wilderness this close. The Tampa cable car climbs straight from the old town to a ridge with the whole city spread out below; in spring and autumn the trails reward you with golden light over the rooftops and, if you are lucky, a glimpse of wild chamois. A short drive up the mountain reaches Poiana Brașov, Romania’s best-known ski resort, with hotels and restaurants serving wild-game specialties. The Carpathians around Brașov also hold Europe’s densest brown bear population — the rescued bears of the Libearty sanctuary at Zarnesti are an easy and moving half-day trip.

When to visit and how to see it

May through September is best for hiking, the cable car and the long warm evenings; December brings an intimate Christmas market to Council Square. Brașov is an easy 2.5-3 hour trip from Bucharest and works both as a day trip and as a base — our castles day trip and our Bear Sanctuary & Brașov overnight both centre on the city, and it is a key stop on the 9-day Transylvania Step by Step tour and the Essential Romania Weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Brașov worth visiting?

Yes — Brașov is one of the most rewarding cities in Romania. The medieval Saxon old town, the Black Church (the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul), and the surrounding Carpathian peaks make it both walkable and dramatic. It also works as a base for Bran Castle, Peles, the Saxon fortified churches, and the Bear Sanctuary.

How many days do I need in Brașov?

A full day covers the historic center — Council Square, the Black Church, Rope Street, the Tampa cable car. Two days lets you add Bran Castle. Three days lets you add the Saxon fortified churches at Harman and Prejmer, the Bear Sanctuary at Zarnesti, and a meal in a countryside household.

What's the best time of year to visit Brașov?

May through September for hiking, outdoor cafes and long warm evenings. December for the Christmas market on Council Square (smaller than Sibiu's but more intimate). The Tampa mountain trail is at its best in late September with golden light over the old rooftops.

How do I get from Bucharest to Brașov?

Brașov is about 2.5-3 hours from Bucharest by road or train, through the scenic Prahova Valley past Sinaia and Peles Castle. It is one of the easiest escapes from the capital — close enough for a day trip, though it rewards an overnight, and it is the natural first stop on any trip deeper into Transylvania.

Is Brașov a good base for exploring the area?

Excellent. Within an hour of Brașov you can reach Bran Castle, Peles Castle in Sinaia, the Saxon fortified churches of Harman and Prejmer, the Libearty bear sanctuary at Zarnesti, and the ski slopes of Poiana Brașov. Many travelers settle in Brașov for two or three nights and day-trip out from there.
