What You’ll Experience
Romania is one of Europe’s oldest and most underrated wine countries, with a viticultural history stretching back to the ancient Dacians. The Dealu Mare (Great Hill) wine region, just 90 minutes north of Bucharest, is Romania’s premier red wine area — often compared to Burgundy for its terroir and to Napa Valley for its ambition.
Your day begins with a scenic drive from Bucharest through the rolling hills of Muntenia, passing sunflower fields and small villages where roadside stalls sell fresh honey and homemade zacusca (a smoky vegetable spread). At our first winery, you’ll learn about the unique Romanian grape varietals — Feteasca Neagra (Black Maiden), Feteasca Alba, and Feteasca Regala — grapes that exist nowhere else in the world. You’ll tour the vineyards and cellars, learning about both traditional and modern winemaking techniques.
We visit 2-3 carefully selected wineries, each offering a different perspective on Romanian wine. Some are boutique family operations; others are larger estates with state-of-the-art facilities. At each, you’ll enjoy guided tastings of their best wines paired with local cheeses, cured meats, and other artisanal products.
Lunch is a highlight — a gourmet meal at one of the wineries, featuring seasonal dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients and perfectly paired with the estate’s wines.
